Sustainability has become an important factor when it comes to choosing where to vacation and for a good reason. We are all trying to do our parts in becoming more ecologically, whether we sort our garbage, take shorter showers, or buy locally, so it is only natural to continue doing so also when vacationing.
It might seem odd to associate sustainability with luxury, but in the Calma Villas context it simply means that we have created a beautiful space for our guests where they can destress, enjoy the beauty of the island and its culture, while still being responsible for their carbon footprint and their impact on the environment.
In our context it is not just about using sustainable building materials, solar panels, water filters or the electric car charging station, it is also about the locals in Sissi, as the support of the local community is the very fabric of the success of Calma Villas. Our “welcome pizza” during check-in is deliciously made by a family owned place, 3 minutes away from the villas.
As a business there are a plethora of actions to be taken when choosing to be more ecological, so we chose to focus on actions that would immediately impact our small island, such as:
- Energy Efficiency
Solar panels for water heating, magnetic cards to reduce electrical waste while guests are away, heatproof and soundproof insulation, AC power down sensors on all balcony doors, heated pools are covered when not in use to reduce temperature drain
- Water Conservation - water pressure sensors, salt-based pool water maintenance, heated pools are covered when not in use to reduce water evaporation, advanced water filtering system that provides excellent drinking tap water
- Sustainable Building Materials - local materials used for building the houses include rocks, wood and plants, prokat blocks that are power, energy and environment conscious
- Indoor Air Quality - smoke alarms, natural ventilation due to big doors and windows equipped with bug nets, full house cleaning and special disinfection before each arrival, top line air conditioners with air purifiers and certificate for last technical service
- Waste Reduction - the welcome package includes only fresh fruits and fresh items - locally sourced when available, the basic pantry includes long lasting items such as spices, pasta, rice, tomato sauce, olive oil from local farmers
- Waste segregation: glass, plastic and paper, organic with smaller bins in the villa and bigger bins in the parking area)
- Community engagement - Guests are encouraged to explore and support nearby businesses, are educated on the local culture and customs, and we also keep updates with the community outdoor events in order to recommend them to our guests. To continue in that spirit of giving back to our community, we are sponsoring since 2022 a local female beach soccer team.
This sustainability report is to show both to our guests and our local community that we take our responsibility and commitment earnestly, as transparency and accountability is part of Calma Villas dna.
